The Tavern – Behind the logo

Sometimes a logo is just a pictorial representation of a product or a business name but we had a clear vision and specific outline of what we wanted The Tavern to be and what that name and logo needed to represent.

Our main pictorial logo is the crossed lantern and we chose this specifically as in many historical situations and traditions the lit lantern or the burning candle was a symbol of refuge, and a beacon safety. Lanterns would also light the way for visitors and neighbours so they could find their way home.

The meaning of the Lantern represents what The Tavern is at the heart because it is a space of refuge and safety for our fellow Goths (baby bats) and persons who are Alternative to standard cultural norms for a variety of reasons.

Our logo doesn’t end at the Lantern.

We also wanted to create the same feelings in our wording because the full story matters to us. To depict togetherness we have the A and the R encompass T and the N – this is because the T and N are the outside letters. Therefore we have used the A and the R to embrace and protect the outsiders and embrace them. It’s ok to be an outsider or to linger on the outside, but we are here on the inside watching out for you and you are as much a part of our need to tell our story as we are. As without outsiders we would be ‘AVER’ and we can’t make sense without our outsiders!!
